Course Overview

A 2-day introduction to maritime archaeology that includes at least 8 hours of classroom work in addition to practical work that may be carried out underwater and/or on land.

The Part 1 course is a general introduction to maritime archaeology which focuses on aspects such as pre-disturbance, or in other words, non-intrusive surveys of shipwreck sites.

The course structure includes:

  • Archaeological principles
  • Archaeological sciences
  • Materials and conservation
  • Ship construction
  • Archaeological Surveying
  • Search techniques
  • Site position-fixing
  • Remote sensing
  • State/Territory and Commonwealth legislation

The Part 1 course is generally run over a weekend, with theoretical lecture components and simulated underwater exercises. Depending on time available as well as recognised qualifications and experience, underwater exercises can also be conducted. Being able to dive, however; is not a requirement for attending this course.

The standard course fees range up to $280 around Australia, depending on venue hire and staff. Full time students are entitled to a concession fee of $150 upon request. Those who complete Part I will receive AIMA membership for one year. This is normally backdated to 1st July but for courses after 1st April participants can opt for membership commencing in the following July.
