Course Overview

A 2-day introduction to maritime archaeology that includes at least 8 hours of classroom work in addition to practical work that may be carried out underwater and/or on land.

The Part 1 course is a general introduction to maritime archaeology which focuses on aspects such as pre-disturbance, or in other words, non-intrusive surveys of underwater cultural heritage sites.

The course structure includes:

  • Introduction to AIMA/NAS
  • What is Archaeology
  • Archaeological Principles
  • Ship construction
  • Area Seach, Survey and Position Fixing
  • Site Survey Methods
  • Conservation
  • Cultural Heritage Management
  • State/Territory and Commonwealth legislation

The Part 1 course is generally run over one weekend with theoretical lecture components and simulated land exercises. Underwater exercises can also be conducted with those who have diving qualifications. Being able to dive, however, is not a requirement for attending this course.

The standard course fees is AU$270 around Australia, depending on venue hire and staff. Bona fide Full time students are entitled to a concession fee of $200 upon request. Those completing the Part I course will receive AIMA membership for one year. This is normally backdated to 1st July, but for courses after 1st April participants can opt for membership commencing in the following July.
