Notes from AHOY January 2025

Our first AHOY of the year was made exciting by Sasha Joura's guest lecture 'Buoyed by community: Local knowledge and maritime archaeology on Stewart Island/Rakiura, New Zealand'! Thank you again for sharing your really interesting community archaeology approach that made us WOW (and giggle) and marvel at the wealth of knowledge that local communities can hold.

We were so happy to hear that Sasha has been awarded the Walton Fund from the New Zealand Archaeological Association to continue her research. Well done, Sasha!

AIMA Updates

There are fewer AIMA updates this month after the festive season but we have a busy and exciting year ahead.

  • AIMA representatives have submitted a maritime-themed session for the 10th World Archaeological Congress (WAC-10) in Darwin in June titled 'Exploring the Depths: Mariitme Archaeology Across the Globe'. Information about the session is here and you can submit papers here by 31 March 2025. More information will be distributed soon!
  • AJMA Volume 48 (2024) is now on the AIMA website! Members need to log in then navigate to Current Journals to download it. Calls are open for papers for V49 (2025) - see the AJMA page on the website for more information and contact Journal Editor Jeremy Green on publications@aima-underwater.org.au with your interest or any questions.
  • Did you see the AIMA Newsletter from December 2024 (Vol43.4)? Thanks to the hard work of Louise Brooke, the newsletter has been restarted! Download it here. Check out the Newsletters page of the website for information on submitting 2025 content, with January-March content due by 12th March 2025.

Discussion

An AIMA member raised a question regarding the shipwreck artefact collection held by a private individual and what responsible actions the custodian can take to ensure the collection can be well managed now and into the future. Advice was provided regarding assisting the individual to create a catalogue of the collection and to speak to the relevant State Practitioner.

The AIMA AHOY meetings are a great place to ask questions about maritime archaeology legislation, best practice approaches, useful contacts, to ask for help, to bounce ideas, network, and much more. Please don't hesitate to join our meetings and ask any questions to the brains trust of members at your disposal!

See you on Monday, 10th February for the next AHOY.
