AHOY September Notes

If you missed our September monthly AHOY members meeting, here are some notes to catch you up.

The AHOY meetings for the next AIMA year may change after the AGM depending on member feedback and Exec capacities. If you are enjoying the AHOY meetings, have any feedback, or would prefer it on a different day/time, please let us know!

Guest Lecture

Sasha Joura provided a fascinating talk on "wrecking" kids lives - aka. introducing maritime archaeology into the high school cirriculum. She shared some fantastic examples of how she has engaged her students in shipwreck stories and investigations, as well as what she found on her scholarship-funded visits to maritime museums around the world! Here are some resources if you're interested:

  • Find out more about her scholarship research by reading her "Scholarship Tour: Learning about maritime archaeology in education" blog
  • Also check out Sasha's side hustle, Handy History, which produces resources and kits including replica artefacts for teachers to use in the classroom!
  • Did you know that the Australian National Maritime Museum has a couple of online games for kids? Wreck seekerenables students to take the role of a maritime archaeologist hunting for Australia’s shipwrecks. The Voyage Gameputs students on a convict ship with challenges to face on the journey.
  • Sasha's students also really enjoy 3D shipwreck models on SketchFab

Sasha calls on maritime archaeologists to assist in getting maritime archaeology into schools. You can help by visiting schools (especially during National Archaeology Week), sharing engaging shipwreck stories with teachers, and providing sacrifical artefacts (with a permit if required) for their classes.
