Title: Navigating the RMA and HNZPTA: Understanding heritage requirements in legislation
Abstract:
New Zealand has two key pieces of legislation that recognise and provide for heritage and archaeology. In order to ensure your development does not adversely affect heritage it is important to familiarise and understand how these laws apply.
Resource Management Act: The protection of historic heritage is a matter of national importance and as such, it must be considered in a resource consent application.
Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act: When your project may modify an archaeological site, then prior to any works beginning an authority is required to authorise the effects on the archaeology.
Heritage New Zealand staff will introduce you to the legislation and give tips to understand the legal requirements and stay on the right side of heritage law during your development.

Melanie Russell, Chief Legal Advisor, Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga.
